a definitive account of how the programme was born and how it evolved, and includes behind-the-scenes dramas that listeners never heard, and the truth behind many rumours which have long puzzled "Archers'" addicts. The text is illustrated throughout and includes historic photographs specially taken by "Picture Post's" photographer Bert Hardy in 1950.

Referred to on umra as "TATTS", this is considered to be one of the more authoritative works on The Archers, although it is published as "the unauthorised inside story". The author worked on The Archers for eleven years as a writer and later as the programme's editor, leaving in 1986. The book is not authorised by the BBC and is full of incidental information, as well as coverage of the more important events, and all in a style that makes it a good read. The book has been revised and republished in 2000.
